Nigeria became a member of Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in 1971. Reserves of crude oil in Nigeria is 28.2 billion barrels.
When it comes to producing oil Nigeria rank number 6 in global ranking and number one in Africa.
Crude oil production capacity 2.5 million barrels per day. Total of natural gas reserves: 165 trillion standard cubic feet (scf), which includes 75.4 trillion scf of non associated gas.
Advantage of an Oil Producing State in Nigeria
Once an oil producing state is discovered and start exportation, it would contribute to Nigeria oil export.
13 percent derivation revenue is set aside by the Federal Government to help the oil producing communities to develop infrastructure in their domains and communities.
Revenue meant for the producing communities is set aside in the federation account unfortunately the fund has been mismanaged by the federal government.
The List of Oil Producing State in Nigeria
Akwa Ibom State
Akwa Ibom, the land of promise. Akwa Ibom State was founded on 23rd, September 1987 and is located in the south-south region of Nigeria.
The capital of Akwa Ibom is Uyo. It is not only blessed with crude oil, it is also blessed with other minerals such as natural gas, salt, clay, limestone, coal, glass sand and giver nitrate.
It is the largest oil producing state in Nigeria accounting for 31.4% of the total oil produced daily
Delta state
This state has 25 Local Government Areas with a population of more than 4 million. It is the second largest oil producing states after Akwa Ibom in the country producing about 21.56%.
Rivers State
In terms of crude oil production, Rivers produce 21.43% of the total produce. There are ethnic group which are:the Ikwerre, Okrika, Upobo, Kalabari the Ubani. Rivers state is also one of the richest states in Nigeria.
Bayelsa State
Bayelsa State alone produce up to 18% of the daily crude oil in Nigeria. The state water has been affected due to oil spillage the aquatic animals. This also caused some problem between the government and the people in the state.
Ondo State
Ondo state produces up to 3.8% of Nigeria’s daily crude oil. It has over 2.5 million population and founded in 1976. other natural resources like bitumen which makes it the largest supplier of tar and bitumen in Nigeria.
Edo State
Edo state accounts for 2% of crude oil produced in Nigeria and its capital city is Benin with an inhabitants of 3.5 million.
It has some historical fact so it’s a good place for tourism. The state is also blessed with so many natural mineral resources such as limestone, clay, gold, iron ore, fine sand and granite
Abia
Abia is located in the south eastern geopolitical zone of the country. The place is blessed with lead, zinc, fine sand and limestone. The inhabitants there are over 3 million. The state accounts for 0.68% of oil produced daily in Nigeria. They mainly speak Igbo language.
Lagos State
Lagos is the richest state in Nigeria. the centre of excellence and the commercial base of the nation.
It has population of more than 20 million residents and business thrive there. People from different background, culture, tribe resides there for business.
Lagos and Ondo are the two states in the southwest region that contribute to Nigeria’s oil exports
Anambra
August 24, 2021 letter to the National Assembly with reference number RMC/O&G/48/VOL/I/55, makes the state the latest state to join the list of oil-producing areas in Nigeria. They mainly speak Igbo language in anambra
Despite the fact that these state are producing oil standard of living continue to worsen every day due to the diversion of the oil revenue by politicians and officials.
I believe and I hope for a better Nigeria where things would be done without corruption.
