Memphis Depay born on the 13th of February 1994, also known simply as Memphis, is a Dutch professional footballer who plays as a forward for La Liga club Barcelona and the Netherlands national team.
Memphis began his professional career with PSV Eindhoven and, under the influence of coach Philippe Cocu, became an integral part of the team, scoring 50 goals in 124 appearances in all competitions. In the 2014/15 season, he scored his 22 goals in his 30 games, being the top scorer in the Eredivisie and helping the team to win the Eredivisie title for the first time since 2008. He was also named the Dutch Footballer of the Year for his performances during that season. His performances also earned him the title of ‘Young Player of the World’ by France Football in 2015. Memphis joined England’s Manchester United in June 2015 for a transfer fee of £25 million. After a period of disappointment, he joined the French club Lyon in January 2017. After four seasons there, he joined Barcelona on a free transfer in 2021.
A product of the organization of the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB), Memphis has represented the national team at all professional levels since the early stages of its development under the guidance of renowned Dutch coaches and players. He was part of his Dutch U17 squad that won the 2011 European Championship. He made his senior international debut in 2013 and made his breakthrough on the international stage the following year, being part of his third-place finisher in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. On the 19th of June 2021, La Liga club Barcelona announced a free transfer of Memphis on a two-year deal, BBC Sport reports. According to his grandmother, he aspired to become a Barcelona player since he was four years old. On 15 August, Memphis made his La Liga debut for Barcelona in his 4–2 victory over Real Sociedad at the Camp his Nou. Six days later, he scored his first goal for the club in his second game, in a 1–1 draw with Athletic Bilbao.
